Cocoa flavanols (cocoa extract): evidence, dose and safety

Cocoa flavanols are polyphenols from the cocoa bean, mostly epicatechin and procyanidins. Most are lost when cocoa is processed into chocolate, so extracts are standardised to a measured amount.

Cocoa flavanols help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow (beneficial effect with a daily intake of 200 mg of cocoa flavanols).

What the research looked at

Each line is one body of research, graded A (strong) to D (weak). How we grade evidence. What each study measured is explained in your personal plan.

GradeWho was studiedReferences
B Healthy adults
  • EFSA NDA Panel 2012 (cocoa flavanols and endothelium-dependent vasodilation); Reg. (EU) 851/2013 and 2015/539
C Adults 60+ without heart disease
  • Sesso HD et al. Am J Clin Nutr 2022;115:1490-1500 (COSMOS, 21,442 adults; PMID 35294962)

How much

  • Adult upper limit: 500 mg a day from food and supplements together. Source: Dose with long-term safety data: 500 mg a day for a median 3.6 years (COSMOS, Sesso HD et al. Am J Clin Nutr 2022).
  • Children's doses are set by age, and some ingredients are for adults only.

Who should not take it, or should check first

  • Not suitable. Concentrated cocoa extract (with some caffeine and theobromine) has not been studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
